25 Weird Living Spaces You Won’t Believe Are Real
Airbnb is all-in on bizarre, extraordinary listings for vacation rentals. The company launched a $10 million OMG! Fund to award $100,000 to design and develop the world’s most innovative and distinctive living spaces in 2022, following the launch of several new categories on its website. From a “romantic” bamboo retreat in Bali, a mushroom-shaped hut in Thailand, a guitar-shaped house in South Korea, a converted missile silo in New Mexico, or a cow-shaped caravan in Suffolk – these are just some of the breathtaking living spaces. Boats and quirky cabins are available for rent, all of which can be found using the aptly named OMG! Filter. Keep scrolling down to see the weirdest and most unique options for your next vacation.
Wild Ideas
In 2021, Airbnb added more than 30,000 unique living spaces worldwide. Still, the demand for eccentric living quarters is so great that the business intends to foot the tab for additional construction. 100 participant will each receive $100,000 as part of Airbnb’s $10 million OMG! Fund will enable them to transform their wild ideas into legitimate sources of income.
Submissions are being accepted by Airbnb through July 22. Proposals will be evaluated on their creativity, viability, sustainability, and the guest experience they will offer. Style legend Iris Apfel, architect Koichi Takada, Airbnb Superhost Kristie Wolfe, and Bruce Vaughn, VP of Experiential Creative Product at Airbnb, make up the esteemed panel of judges.
OMG-Worthy Living Spaces
There are just two requirements for winners. Fund applicants are required to rent the new space on Airbnb after their projects are finished, and they are not permitted to offer the home on other short-term rental websites for a year. According to Airbnb, the average host in the United States made over $13,800 in 2021, an increase of 85% from 2019.
Almost the same time, nights reserved at extraordinary, OMG-worthy living spaces grew by over 49%. Airbnb hosts have learned that a creative conversion – spacecraft, railroad cart, grain silo, covered wagon, or glass bubble – can result in a thriving side company. The better the concept, the stronger the dedication to the subject.
Boise’s Big Idaho Potato Hotel
For Airbnb entrepreneurs, no concept is too odd. Consider the unexpected success of Kristie Wolfe, who invested $32,000 in Boise’s Big Idaho Potato Hotel. It is one of Airbnb’s most well-known living spaces, now turned into a six-ton spud property salvaged from the Idaho Potato Commission. Wolfe has made more than $208,000 since 2019, which has enabled her to bootstrap her way to four more OMG!-rated Airbnb rentals.
While it may not be an actual potato, this giant, 6-ton replica of potato has been hollowed out and converted into a surprisingly stylish Airbnb cabin.
The Spaceship Mini Home
The spaceship small-home, which costs $289 per night to rent near Joshua Tree, California, fully embraces the UFO theme and comes equipped with a ladder and a pop-up bubble window. It is an excellent example of A creative conversion that can result in a thriving side company.
The home’s inside is ideal for unwinding; it has counters lining the walls so visitors can observe the scenery outside. A comfy bed for curling up at night, and some very retro egg chairs where visitors can curl up with a friendly UFO or alien-themed book.
